Overview

This Extension Privacy Policy explains how Dechecker (“Dechecker”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you install or use our Chrome extension Audio to Text Converter: Transcribe & AI Summary (the “Extension”).

By installing or using the Extension, you agree to this Extension Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the Extension and do not use it.

This policy is specific to the Extension. Our broader website and product practices are described in our general Privacy Policy. If there is a conflict about Extension data practices, this Extension Privacy Policy controls for the Extension.

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last Updated” date on this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

Our Core Privacy Commitment

We design the Extension around a single purpose: converting audio and video into text transcripts and AI-generated summaries.

We follow data minimization: we only process data needed to provide transcription, summarization, and related export features you request. We do not sell your Extension content. We do not use your uploaded media or transcripts to build advertising profiles.

Single Purpose

The Extension’s single purpose is to help users:

  • upload local audio/video files,
  • record audio from the current browser tab,
  • record microphone audio,
  • obtain a transcript and AI summary, and
  • copy or download those results.

Prominent Disclosure: User Data Collection, Processing, Storage, and Sharing

To comply with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, we disclose Extension data handling as follows.

What Data We Collect and Process

1. Media you provide (required for the core feature)

When you use the Extension, you may provide:

  • audio or video files you upload,
  • audio recorded from the current browser tab,
  • audio recorded from your microphone.

This media may contain speech or other personal information that appears in the recording. We process this media solely to generate transcripts and summaries for you.

2. Derived content

We generate and return:

  • transcripts (and related transcription metadata such as timestamps/segments when available),
  • AI text summaries,
  • visual summaries (when generated),
  • export outputs you request (for example, PDF generated from summary HTML).

3. Request metadata needed to run a transcription job

To complete your request, we process limited job metadata such as file name, media type/size, approximate duration (when available), and task identifiers used to track transcription status.

4. Technical connection data (not used for advertising or profiling)

We do not intentionally collect your IP address, browser fingerprint, or device identifiers as product analytics, and we do not use them for advertising or user profiling.

Like any secure web service, when the Extension calls our API, our servers may transiently receive standard connection metadata (such as IP address, timestamp, and basic request headers). This may be used only for security, reliability, and abuse prevention, not for marketing.

5. Data we do not collect in the current Extension

The current Extension does not:

  • require you to create an account or sign in,
  • ask for your name, email, or payment details inside the Extension,
  • read your browsing history,
  • scrape or extract webpage HTML/DOM content,
  • inject content scripts to analyze page text,
  • sell or share your media/transcripts for advertising.

How We Process Your Data

When you start transcription:

  1. The Extension uploads your media to Dechecker services at https://dechecker.ai (via a secure upload flow).
  2. We create a transcription task and process the media with AI speech-to-text and summarization models.
  3. The Extension polls task status and displays transcript/summary results in the side panel.
  4. If you choose export features (such as PDF), the relevant content needed for that export is sent to Dechecker services to generate the file.

Important: Cloud processing is required for the Extension’s transcription and AI summary features. If you do not want media to leave your device, do not use upload/record-and-transcribe features.

How We Store Your Data

Local storage (on your device)

The Extension may store limited state locally in Chrome storage, such as recording session status needed to keep the side panel UI consistent while a capture is in progress. This local state is used for Extension functionality and is not used for advertising.

Cloud storage / processing (user-initiated)

Media and derived transcripts/summaries are processed on Dechecker infrastructure only after you take an action that starts transcription or export.

Deletion after use

After you finish using a transcription request (once processing is complete and results have been delivered for that use), we delete the uploaded media and generated transcripts/summaries from our systems. We do not retain them for secondary use, advertising, model training reuse, or later resale.

Temporary technical logs used for security and reliability, if any, are not used to rebuild your media or transcript content.

How We Share Your Data

We do not sell your Extension media, transcripts, or summaries.

We may share data only in these limited cases:

  • Service providers: trusted processors that help us host infrastructure, store uploaded files temporarily, run AI transcription/summarization, or provide security/operational support, under obligations to use the data only to provide services to us.
  • Legal requirements: when required by law, legal process, or governmental request.
  • Safety / rights protection: when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect Dechecker, our users, or the public from harm, fraud, or abuse.
  • Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate safeguards.

We do not publicly publish your Extension transcripts or recordings. The current Extension does not include a public “share link” feature.

Permissions and Why They Are Needed

The Extension requests only permissions needed for its single purpose, including:

  • storage — temporary local session/UI state,
  • sidePanel — main Extension interface,
  • tabs / activeTab — identify/invoke the current tab for tab-audio capture after user action,
  • tabCapture — capture audio playing in the current tab when you choose Tab Audio,
  • offscreen — record captured tab audio under Manifest V3 constraints,
  • host access to https://dechecker.ai/* — upload media and retrieve transcription/summary results.

The Extension does not use these permissions to read your general browsing history or to collect unrelated website content.

You control when processing happens:

  • Media is uploaded/processed only after you start transcription (or request an export).
  • You can stop recording or discard a capture before transcription.
  • You can uninstall the Extension at any time to remove the Extension and its local storage from your browser.
  • You can avoid providing sensitive recordings.

Children’s Privacy

The Extension is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Extension, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

International Processing

Extension-related media and transcription processing are handled in the United States, where Dechecker and/or our service providers operate the relevant infrastructure. By using the Extension, you understand that your information may be processed in the United States as needed to provide the service.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Extension Privacy Policy periodically. The updated version will be posted at this URL with a revised “Last Updated” date.
